Harris County is a county located in the U.S state of Texas located in the southeastern part of the state near Galveston Bay As of the 2010 Census the population was 4,092,459 making it the most populous county in Texas and the third most populous county in the United States Its county seat is Houston the largest city in Texas and fourth largest city in the United States the county was founded in 1836 and organized in 1837. It is named for John Richardson Harris who founded the town of Harrisburg on Buffalo Bayou in 1826. According to a July 2018 Census estimate Harris County's population had grown to 4,698,619 comprising over 16 percent of Texas's population, Spanish missions within the boundaries of what is now the state of Texas In addition the Chapel of St Basil on the nearby campus of the University of St Thomas is a work of art designed by Philip Johnson that has won many awards for its architecture the Chapel which was built in 1997 contrasts with all of the other buildings on campus as it is made of white stucco and black granite rather than rose-colored brick It is also composed of three geometric forms: the cube the sphere and the plane the cube makes up the majority of the building including the main seating area while a golden semi-sphere dome covered with 23.5 karat gold leaf rises high above the cube the granite plane bisects the cube and opens the chapel to light the cube and plane interplay with the dome creating a sense that the dome is not a cover for the Chapel but rather an opening to the heavens. The Golden Triangle is an area of extreme Southeast Texas near the Louisiana border the "triangle" is formed by Beaumont Port Arthur and Orange which are the largest cities in the area "Golden" refers to the wealth that came from the Spindletop oil strike near Beaumont in 1901 in an attempt to distance the area from the petrochemical industry some area interests attempted to rename the Golden Triangle as the "Triplex." This name change did not catch on and local residents still refer to it as the Golden Triangle Some residents of the Golden Triangle do not consider the Greater Houston area to be part of Southeast Texas and place the western boundary of the region approximately at the Trinity River which is roughly 30 miles from downtown Houston; Recently developed tree-ring evidence shows that the illness which reduced the population in Aztec Mexico was aided by a great drought in the 16th century and which continued through the arrival of the Spanish conquest. This has added to the body of epidemiological evidence indicating that cocoliztli epidemics (Nahuatl name for viral haemorrhagic fever) were indigenous fevers transmitted by rodents and aggravated by the drought the cocoliztli epidemic from 1545 to 1548 killed an estimated 5 to 15 million people or up to 80% of the native population the cocoliztli epidemic from 1576 to 1578 killed an estimated additional 2 to 2.5 million people or about 50% of the remainder. Houston has hosted several major sports events: the 1968 1986 and 2004 Major League Baseball All-Star Games; the 1989 2006 and 2013 NBA All-Star Games; Super Bowl VIII Super Bowl XXXVIII and Super Bowl LI as well as hosting the 1981 1986 1994 and 1995 NBA Finals winning the latter two and co-hosting the 2005 World Series and 2017 World Series winning the latter NRG Stadium hosted Super Bowl LI on February 5 2017, Besides coastal exploration Portuguese ships also made trips further out to gather meteorological and oceanographic information These voyages revealed the archipelagos of Bissagos Islands where the Portuguese were defeated by native people in 1535 Madeira the Azores Cape Verde Sao Tome Trindade and Martim Vaz Saint Peter and Saint Paul Archipelago Fernando de Noronha Corisco Elobey Grande Elobey Chico Annobon Island Ascension Island Bioko Island Falkland Islands Principe Island Saint Helena Island Tristan da Cunha Island and Sargasso Sea.
